Jebrie Cross, 28, and Mariah Thomas, 24, charged with murder, arson in deadly house fire on Hoyt Street in Detroit - James Jordan, 23, and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Jana John, were killed

DETROIT - Two people face murder and arson charges in connection to a deadly fire Sunday 19600 block of Hoyt Street in Detroit.

Jebrie Cross, 28, and Mariah Thomas, 24, both of Detroit, are charged with two counts of felony murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts of arson. They are expected to be arraigned Thursday.

James Jordan, 23, and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Jana John, were killed. Thomas and Cross are accused of throwing bottles filled with a flammable substance at the house and setting it on fire with Jordan and John inside. A third person, a 22-year-old man, also was in the house. He survived his injuries.

Detroit Arson Capt. Pat McNulty said there was a fight hours before the fire started. The fight allegedly was between Jordan and his ex-girlfriend, Thomas, who is the mother of his child. The ex-girlfriend made threats about coming back to the home after the fight, McNulty said.

"The allegations in this case are becoming all too common," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. "Have we really come to the place where if someone rejects another person, the result is to seek revenge by burning a home with occupants in it?”
