A firefighter tending to a crash scene in Marquette County was killed Friday when he was struck by a vehicle that entered a highway median, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The firefighter was a 46-year-old man from Endeavor, according to a news release from the state patrol that did not identify him or his department affiliation.
According to the release, the crash was reported shortly before 4:30 p.m. on southbound I-39 at mile marker 99.5 near Endeavor, where a northbound passenger car entered the median and crashed into the mile marker.
Fire and rescue personnel from several communities were working on the southbound shoulder when a southbound vehicle entered the median and struck the firefighter.
The firefighter was airlifted to Divine Savior hospital in Portage and then to the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, where he died from his injuries, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported and the incident remained under investigation, according to the release.
