APPLETON WI - A little something to do for all you WHITE GUILTERS out there: Dr. Angela Davis to give keynote address at Lawrence MLK event
As for me, I will be doing a few "SHOTS" in MLK Jr. honor!
On Monday, the nation reflects on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A presentation honoring the man’s legacy will take place at Lawrence University in Appleton at 6:30 p.m.
At least 1,200 are expected to fill Lawrence Memorial Chapel for a presentation with the theme “Breaking the Chains of Injustice.”
A keynote address will be given by Dr. Angela Davis. Davis, one of the prominent faces and voices of the 1960s counterculture, is a social justice activist, scholar and professor.
She is expected to address race relations and how events happening around the globe are connected.
“She also has a global perspective on tying what’s happening in let’s say, Ferguson, to what’s happening across the country, racism maybe in Paris or Palestine and in different areas of the world,” said Kathy Flores, Diversity Coordinator, City of Appleton.
This is the 25th year for the MLK celebration at Lawrence University. It is free and open to the public.
Stansbury Theater in the music-drama center will be set up with a video screen to show the presentation should the chapel reach capacity.
