SALT LAKE SHOOTING: 1st cop killed in line of duty in 2016 shot dead in Utah traffic stop — gunman dies, another cop wounded

A 45-year-old Utah police officer was the first cop killed in the line of duty in 2016 while chasing a “violent fugitive” Sunday morning, police said.

Officer Douglas Barney, an 18-year veteran of the Unified Police Department and father of three children, was shot in the head during a cul-de-sac confrontation with the suspected driver of a hit-and-run collision.

Neighbors heard nearly two dozen shots ring out at around 10 a.m. in an exchange of fire that killed Barney and the 31-year-old suspect Cory Lee Henderson. The shooting also wounded Officer Jon Richey.
