Bret Williams who called police on himself faces felonies in stabbing, attempted robbery

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI -- A 19-year-old who allegedly stabbed a man during a gas station robbery attempt – and then called 911 on himself – faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Bret Tyler Williams, of Georgetown Township, was arraigned Tuesday, Feb. 23, on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to rob while armed. Both charges stem from an incident Monday at a Mobil gas station and carry a maximum penalty of up to life in prison.

Sheriff's authorities said Williams entered the Mobil at 4842 Port Sheldon St., at the intersection with 48th Avenue, in Blendon Township just before 6 p.m. Monday. He demanded cash from two clerks while armed with a knife, Ottawa County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Bennett said.

The clerks ran out of the store while Williams stayed behind and tried to open the register.

A customer, a 38-year-old Hudsonville man, entered the store and was stabbed by Williams, Bennett said.

Williams then exited and called 911 to report the crimes. He was arrested at the gas station.

The stabbing victim was transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. He has been discharged from the hospital and is doing well, Bennett said.

The clerks were not injured.

Williams is jailed on $75,000 bond.
