GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A man is accused of criminal sexual conduct for alleged incidents involving two children at a Grand Rapids charter school.

Jalen Harris, 22, turned himself in Tuesday, Feb. 2, after police released surveillance images of a man who entered River City Scholars Charter Academy earlier that day and attempted to contact one of the students. The student did not know the suspect in the incident that was initially described by police as a "potential attempted criminal sexual conduct incident."

The allegations against Harris involve two victims, Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said. A letter to parents said the suspect approached students inside the building Tuesday morning. Students quickly reported the incident to school staff.

Harris, of Grand Rapids, was arraigned Friday on charges in two separate cases in Grand Rapids District Court.

In one case, he is charged with child enticement kidnapping, second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child under 13, and accosting a child for immoral purposes.

In the second case, Harris is charged with child enticement kidnapping, accosting a child for immoral purposes, and attempted second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child under 13.

Jennifer Hoff, communications director for National Heritage Academies, the management company for the K-8 charter school, said parents were notified of the incident Tuesday morning and were later informed of Harris' arrest that afternoon.

Parents were told Harris is not affiliated with the school at 944 Evergreen St. SE. Dixon said Harris was there Tuesday to help pick someone up.

Classes continued Tuesday with additional security.

School officials are conducting an internal review.

"As our school continues to support the police in the investigation, the school continues to conduct an internal review with our safety team to understand how this happened. The safety and security of our students is a priority and we do not take the responsibility to protect and education them lightly," Holly Hillary, interim principal, said in a letter to parents.

Hoff declined to speak further about the matter due to privacy issues.

Harris is charged as a third-time habitual offender. His criminal history includes convictions of assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, records state.

Harris is held on $500,000 bond and awaits a court date later this month.
