CHICAGO UNENDING NEGRO VIOLENCE - 21 SHOT - 2 FATALLY IN LAST 24 HOURS

Shootings have killed two people and wounded at least 19 since Tuesday morning, more than were shot citywide over the entire weekend.

People were injured in attacks from the River North neighborhood downtown south to the Morgan Park neighborhood.

A 21-year-old woman was fatally shot in West Town about 12:10 a.m. Wednesday. She was a passenger in a car in the 2100 block of West Maypole Avenue when someone in the street fired shots that hit her in the back. She went to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A 31-year-old man was killed in the Marquette Park neighborhood about 7:50 p.m., police said. He was walking with a friend in the 6300 block of South Troy Avenue when they heard shots and he collapsed to the ground. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was later pronounced dead.

The man shot in the River North neighborhood was wounded about 2:25 p.m. in the 600 block of North Wells Street and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago police spokesman.

The shooting took place on the west side of the street, in front of two restaurants. The man, who turned 24 on Tuesday, was shot in the groin after a dispute with another man, police said. The second man took out a gun and fired four or five times, then fled.

The shooter, a black man about 25 years old, was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the shooting, and got into a silver minivan with temporary license plates that then went west on Huron Street toward Kingsbury Street, according to police.
