Courtney Copeland was supposed to show up at a friend's place shortly after 1 a.m. Friday to drop off some weed. He almost made it.
Copeland, 22, was blocks away when a bullet flew through the driver's side window of his burgundy BMW and hit him in the back, according to Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman. He managed to get out and flag down an officer near the 25th District police station at Grand and Central avenues.
Copeland was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His family said the bullet pierced his heart.
“We were told he stopped a squad car, saying he was shot, and then collapsed," said his mother, Shapearl Wells. “He was supposed to visit his friend. He called her around 1:15 a.m. and said he’s right outside her house. But when she opened the door, he never appeared.
“I have no words,” she said, wiping away the tears. “My heart is filled with so much pain right now.”
About half an hour before the shooting, Copeland was hanging out with a friend at Paisans Pizzeria in Cicero, his family said. He left to spend the night at a friend’s house near Grand and Central avenues on the Northwest Side, his mother said.
