DETROIT, MI -- Detroit police say a woman used a butcher knife to fatally stab her live-in girlfriend during a fight they had Wednesday, May 11.

Needra Anderson, 45, is now charged with first-degree, premeditated murder for the killing of 23-year-old April Smith. A conviction of that crime carries a punishment of mandatory life in prison.

The women shared an apartment on Corbett Street in Detroit and began fighting about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"During the argument, Anderson retrieved a butcher knife and stabbed Ms. Smith multiple times," the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement Friday. "Police were dispatched to the scene at  7:45 p.m. and observed the victim on a bedroom floor suffering from stab wounds."

Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital about 8:15 p.m.
