Illegal Beanette Abiyail Arroyo (13) of Joliet drowns and her younger brother still missing in Kankakee River

A 13-year-old girl from Joliet died after she and her 12-year-old brother became trapped in water near a dam on the Kankakee River in Wilmington, authorities say.

Authorities in Wilmington, which is in southwest Will County about 60 miles from of Chicago, responded to the incident about 6 p.m. Monday.

Police Chief Phil Arnold said the siblings went into the water, and two bystanders from Blue Island tried to help. Eventually the Good Samaritans and the girl were pulled out.

In a news release, Arnold said rescuers were able to throw a rope in front of the girl, Abiyail Arroyo, but she was unresponsive. Responders from the Wilmington Emergency Service and Disaster Agency eventually recovered the girl, according to the release.
