WASHINGTON — Demaryius Thomas came to the White House with a letter for President Obama.
The Denver Broncos wide receiver didn’t know when or how he would get the note to the president, but the opportunity did eventually present itself.
Last July, Obama pardoned the sentences of 46 nonviolent drug offenders from federal prison, including Thomas’ mom, Katina Smith, who was sentenced to 20 years in 2000 for her involvement in a cocaine distribution operation. It was the largest number of sentences commuted by a president since the Lyndon Johnson administration of the 1960s. Once Smith was out of jail, she was able to see her son play football in person, including Super Bowl 50.
