Two colored men with shady pasts were killed and at least 21 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Saturday afternoon, police said.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday, when a 27-year-old man was killed in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He was outside an apartment building in the 200 block of North Kostner Avenue when he was shot in the head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Latrell Gipson, of the 1000 block of North Parkside Avenue.
At 7:10 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old man was killed in the West Woodlawn neighborhood. He was in a Chevrolet in the 6600 block of South Champlain Avenue when someone in an SUV pulled up alongside and someone inside fired several shots, police said. The man in the Chevrolet suffered several gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
The two-door Chevrolet remained at the scene Saturday night, parked on the west side of Champlain near 67th Street, as police detectives examined the scene.
Other shootings:
- At 6:45 a.m. Sunday, a 34-year-old man was shot in the Little Village neighborhood. He got himself to Mount Sinai with a gunshot wound to the left ear and told investigators he had been shot in the 3200 block of West 26th Street. He was listed in good condition.
- At 4:30 a.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the leg in the Near West Side neighborhood. He went to Mount Sinai after being shot in the 2600 block of West Madison Street. His condition was stabilized.
- At 4 a.m., a 20-year-old woman was shot in the West Rogers Park neighborhood. She was walking outside in the 6200 block of North Talman Avenue when three males she didn't recognize began chasing her. She ran to her apartment building, and they followed her to her unit and fired several shots through the door. She was shot in the neck and went to Presence St. Francis Hospital in serious condition.
- At 3:40 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot while driving in the Logan Square neighborhood. He was facing east on Fullerton Avenue stopped at Western Avenue when a black SUV pulled alongside and someone inside fired shots, hitting him in the arm. The SUV drove east toward the expressway; the man who was shot went to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and his condition was stabilized.
- At 3 a.m., a 32-year-old man was shot in the 7100 block of South Eggleston Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood. He was on the sidewalk when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle, hitting him in the foot. He went to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- About 1:35 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the South Austin neighborhood. He was in the 200 block of North Cicero Avenue when someone shot him in the shoulder. He went to Mount Sinai in serious condition.
- At 1:25 a.m., a 34-year-old man was shot during a domestic dispute in the Logan Square neighborhood. He went to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the face and was listed in serious condition. Police said the shooting occurred in the 2000 block of North Kedzie Avenue.
- Also at 1:25 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the Bronzeville neighborhood. He got himself to Mercy Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand after being shot in the 200 block of East Pershing Road. He was listed in good condition.
- At 12:35 a.m., a 38-year-old man was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood near the intersection of Maypole and Keeler. He got himself to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to both legs. Information was not available about his condition.
- Just before 11:40 p.m. Saturday, a 32-year-old man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood. He was in the driver's seat of a parked car in the 7300 block of South Emerald Avenue when someone walked up and fired shots. The man was shot in the chest and went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.
- About 10:45 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the South Austin neighborhood. He got himself to West Suburban Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the right leg and told investigators he had been shot in the 800 block of North Cicero Avenue. His condition was stabilized.
- Just before 10:30 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in the Chatham neighborhood. He was walking in the 700 block of East 82nd Street when someone fired shots from a nearby white sedan. He went to Jackson Park Hospital with gunshot wounds to both arms, and his condition was stabilized.
- About 10 p.m., five people were shot within minutes of each other in two shootings on the West Side, police said. Just after 10 p.m., two men ages 18 and 63 were shot in a gas station lot in the South Austin neighborhood. They were standing in the parking lot of a gas station in the 5300 block of West Chicago Avenue when four people approached and started firing shots. The 18-year-old man was shot in the foot and the 63-year-old man was shot in the forearm; both went to West Suburban Medical Center, and their conditions were stabilized. Just before 10 p.m., three people were shot in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood. They were outside in the 900 block of North Kedvale Avenue when they heard gunshots and felt pain. A 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man were each shot in the arm and went to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized. A 41-year-old woman was on a nearby porch when she was hit in the face with bullet fragments. She went to Stroger Hospital, and her condition was stabilized.
- At 9:30 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot in the calf as he walked in the 12700 block of South Sangamon Street in the West Pullman neighborhood. He went to MetroSouth Medical Center, and his condition was stabilized.
- Just before 7:55 p.m., a 60-year-old man was shot in the South Chicago neighborhood. He was in a vehicle in the 2800 block of East 87th Street when someone fired shots, hitting him in the leg, police said. He got himself to Advocate Trinity Hospital, and his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man did not appear to be the intended target of the shooting.
- At 6:30 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in a Bronzeville neighborhood backyard. Someone with a gun entered the backyard, in the 300 block of East 37th Street, and fired shots, hitting the man in the arm and buttocks. He went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
- About 5:30 p.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the right leg in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman. The man was on the street in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street when he got into a fight with someone who hasn't been identified. The other person pulled out a gun and shot him, Quaid said. The man went to Loretto Hospital in a private vehicle and was in good condition.
