Chicago Negro Violence - Dozen For Wednesday - 12 Shot & Wounded on Hump Day
Twelve colored folks with checkered welfare pasts were shot in Chicago from Wednesday morning through early Thursday, including a man who was killed during a possible road rage incident in Avalon Park on the South Side, police said.
The man, 54, was driving in the 8400 block of South Stony Island Avenue around 2:20 p.m. when he was shot in the chest, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a spokeswoman for Chicago police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting was being investigated as a "possible road rage incident,'' Tannehill said. She had no details and said no arrests have been made.
An hour later in Uptown, a 57-year-old woman was killed and a 58-year-old man was wounded as they stood at the corner of Windsor Avenue and Sheridan Road, police said.
A car drove past around 3:25 p.m. and someone inside opened fire, Tannehill said. The woman was hit in the torso and died at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and the man was hit in the leg and was in good condition at the same hospital, she said.
Police said they were reviewing video but reported no one in custody.
Another fatal shooting occurred 11 hours later in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.
Police were called to the scene of an accident and found a 21-year-old man in a car in the 10200 block of South Lafayette Avenue around 2:35 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.
No one was reported in custody.
Wednesday morning, a 15-year-old boy was shot in West Englewood.
The boy was outside near the 1400 block of West 72nd Street when a group began firing shots toward the teen about 11:15 a.m., police said. The boy was shot twice in the buttocks and taken to Comer Children's Hospital.
The group left the scene on foot, police said. There weren't any other reported injuries.
Willie Tobias, 75, was eating breakfast inside his home, located near the shooting of the boy, when he heard the commotion. "I seen red tape," Tobias said. "Somebody's shot? Oh, Jesus."
As officers began securing a perimeter around the scene, Tobias looked at his parked 1992 Chevrolet Caprice that was damaged by the gunfire. The rear passenger window of the car was shot out. Tobias said he planned to search salvage yards for a new window.
A man drove up to the scene to report to officers that his white Ford F-150 truck had also been damaged by the gunfire. The truck’s rear window had been hit twice.
Around the corner from the car, officers placed nine paper placeholders to mark spent shell casings found on the scene.
