Lynwood IL - Christopher L. Stone (Cold) identified as the DRIVING WHILE BLACK man who flew his vehicle into a body of water

Authorities have identified the man pulled Monday from a car that drove into a retention pond near Lynwood as a 28-year-old Chicago Heights resident.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday on the body of Christopher L. Stone, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The autopsy results weren't immediately available.

Crews from multiple departments spent two days in frigid water working to recover the Pontiac sedan that on Sunday had driven off the road on the south side of Lincoln Highway east of Torrence Avenue and plunged into 30-foot-deep water, authorities said.

Cook County Sheriff's police said Monday they weren't sure whether other people had been in the vehicle, and that divers would not return Tuesday unless they believed another person was still in the water.

Lynwood Fire Chief John Cobb said over the weekend it was possible one or two people were inside the car.

Divers recovered Stone from the car, which had been buried up to the doors in silt more than 70 feet from one edge of the Dr. Mary Woodland Reservoir, authorities said.

The Pontiac was eastbound at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when it left the road and drove 150 to 200 yards directly into the pond, police said.

Dozens of emergency personnel from the Sheriff's office and local fire departments helped in the two-day recovery effort.

The below-freezing temperatures caused surface water to freeze on the pond and forced firefighters to cut through inches of ice before divers could reenter the water, police said.

Search to resume Monday for submerged car, passengers
Authorities said they called off the search Sunday night after dive teams rotated out for more than four hours. The effort shifted from rescue to recovery two hours after the search began. Divers were able to pull the car from the pond Monday afternoon.

A Lynwood police officer and a diver were briefly hospitalized on Sunday for exposure.
