Ali Erhaima left Baghdad in 2009 to escape violence and began a new life in the United States, settling in Aurora with his wife and two children, a family friend said.
Early Friday morning, as he was driving in the westbound lanes of Interstate 88 in Naperville, a wrong-way driver crashed into his car, killing Erhaima, his passenger and the other driver.
Illinois State Police continued to investigate the crash late Friday and did not have an explanation for why Domenic Andreoni, 30, of Elgin, was driving his 2012 Toyota Camry the wrong direction in the westbound lanes of the expressway. Erhaima, 32, of Aurora, was driving Shiva Inampudi, 40, home to Naperville when the 1 a.m. crash occurred, according to a state police news release.
