Gang Banging Illegal Beaners take over once Polock held Brighton Park - Chicago Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, High-powered rifle used in Brighton Park attack that left 1 dead, 4 shot & wounded
One Illegal Beaner is dead and four others were wounded in a gang-related shooting in Brighton Park on Wednesday evening, officials said.
A van full of gang members "ambushed" a Toyota sedan, fired into the car with a high-powered rifle in a "retaliation" shooting about 6:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of South Talman Avenue, said Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, who spoke briefly to reporters.
After the shooting, the Toyota sped away, making it to the parking lot at Archer and Western avenues, where paramedics were called to the scene.
One person, an 18-year-old man, was pronounced dead on the scene inside the car, police said.
Four others were shot in the attack. A 22-year-old man was shot in the face and an 18-year-old was shot in the back. Both were listed in critical condition. In addition, a 25-year-old man was shot in the arm and his condition was stabilized. All three were taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment.
A 21-year-old man was shot in the finger in the same attack and went to Mount Sinai Hospital. His condition was stabilized.
Some of the victims are members of the Satan Disciples street gang, and the attackers are believed to be members of the rival Latin Saints, according to a law enforcement source. The source confirmed that the shooters used a .223 caliber rifle.
Police found nearly 30 shell casings at the scene on Talman, which is across the street from an elementary school, Lopez said.
"This is proof positive that weapons of warlike assault weapons and assault rifles ... do not belong on our streets. ... Any one of our children, any one of our families could have been impacted,'' Lopez said. "This is unacceptable."
Wednesday's fatal shooting followed a shooting in Brighton Park last month that left two dead and two injured at the 4300 block of South Rockwell. Lopez said he believes the two shootings are related.
Following that shooting, Lopez urged the city to shut down a local grocery store and taco stand connected to the shooting.
About a block from the elementary school, Charmaine Overman was standing on her porch waiting to see if anything would unfold.
The 55-year-old woman said she was concerned her neighbors car was hit during the gunfire. She wasn't home when the shooting happened but said she saw her neighbor talking to police when she got home.
Overman, who grew up in the same house, said she would consider moving if the violence continues to escalate.
"We've always been a really diverse neighborhood. Always had a lot of nationalities, but it just seems recently for whatever reason, there seems to be a lot more shootings."
Earlier, a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the back in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side was one of six people wounded in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The boy was shot in the 3500 block of West 16th Street around 3:15 p.m., according to preliminary reports from police. The boy was standing outside when a vehicle pulled up, and someone fired shots.
Police said the boy was in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
