University of Chicago Medicine announced Thursday it would build a Level 1 adult trauma center for the South Side on its Hyde Park campus, ditching plans ironed out this fall to open a unit at Holy Cross Hospital on the Southwest Side.

Crain's Chicago Business reports University of Chicago Medicine and Sinai Health System planned to present their proposal to a regional committee of hospitals this week, but will wait until March instead.
Dr. Gary Merlotti of Mount Sinai Hospital says more time is needed to prepare data to support the idea of opening a new trauma center at Holy Cross Hospital, which is part of the Sinai system.
Community activists have sought an adult trauma center in the area for years.
University of Chicago Medicine would pay for expansion and renovation at Holy Cross and provide trauma care specialists, while Sinai Health would provide most of the medical personnel.
