POLICE SHOOTING: Police shoot man in gunbattle along I-5 after he allegedly kills girlfriend

A high-speed chase on Interstate 5 ended with 12 police officers opening fire and killing a homicide suspect Saturday morning along Interstate 5 near Tillicum, authorities said.

The man was wanted for allegedly killing his estranged girlfriend a half-hour earlier.

“Tragically and without warning, there was a shooting this morning at University Place Care Center that took the life of one of our nurses,” said a statement from the facility. “This was not a random event but appears to have been an act of domestic violence” during a shift change. Residents were not in danger, according to the statement .

Minutes after the 6:15 a.m. shooting, Lakewood police spotted the man’s Honda on southbound I-5 . The suspect fired at police as they gave chase, said Lt. Chris Lawler of the Lakewood Police Department.

An officer maneuvered his vehicle to force the Honda to spin out.

The man took cover behind his vehicle and engaged police in a shootout, Lawler said. Twelve officers from three agencies — Lakewood and Steilacoom police, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department — fired back, killing him about 6:45 a.m.

No officers were injured, Lawler said.

Law enforcement shut down I-5 northbound, causing backups that stretched for miles.
