DRIVING WHILE BLACK - CHICAGO POLICE: Car fleeing police in Englewood hits van, 13 people injured

A stolen car driven by a career criminal welfare Negro fleeing police collided with a van Saturday evening, sending 13 people to hospitals, five of them seriously injured, authorities said.

Emergency crews were called to 71st and Carpenter streets about 5:20 p.m. following the crash. An emergency medical services Plan II was declared for the crash, sending 11 ambulances and more than 50 fire personnel to the scene, according to the Fire Department.

In all, at least five people were seriously injured, with four more people in fair-to-serious condition and four others in good-to-fair condition, according to the Fire Department's media office.

The vehicle that caused the crash was fleeing police when it drove past a stop sign and crashed into a van carrying eight people, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

Three people from the car that crashed into the van were taken into police custody following the crash, Sweeney said. Investigators determined that the car was stolen.

Police News Affairs did not immediately have information about the people who were injured.
