Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. announced Monday that the city has reached a deal over police relations more than a year after residents protested how police treated black people.
According to a press release, the parties in the agreement are the city, the Hammond Police Department, the Hammond Fraternal Order of Police, the Hammond NAACP and the Hammond Ministerial Alliance. The agreement will be signed during a press conference Thursday afternoon at City Hall.
McDermott, who declined to comment on the agreement until the signing on Thursday, said that it came after a year of meetings with the U.S. Department of Justice, the NAACP and the HMA.
