Ronald Phipps, of the 500 block of Woodlawn Avenue, is charged with three counts of aggravated battery through the Kane County State's Attorney's Office and single counts of aggravated battery, robbery, fleeing and eluding police and not having a valid driver's license in DuPage County.
Phipps failed to steal a snow shovel from a 66-year-old man in Aurora, according to a police report. However, Phipps did make off with a snow blower about an hour later after he beat up a 71-year-old man across town, according to police.
Police said Phipps approached the first man while he was shoveling snow outside an automotive repair business in the 100 block of North Loucks Street in Aurora around 8:15 a.m. March 3. Phipps demanded the shovel the man was using before punching him in the face, grabbing the shovel and walking around a neighboring building, according to police. The man then walked toward the business to summon help when Phipps reappeared and punched him in the face a second time, according to police. The two men tussled as the man tried to go inside the business. Eventually the man pushed Phipps away, got into the building and locked the door behind him. Phipps then drove away, according to police.
About an hour later, Phipps approached the second man, who was using a snow blower in the 1600 block of Trafalger Lane on the city's Far East Side, and demanded the snow blower the man was using. When the man refused to hand over the snow blower, Phipps swung at him and missed, according to police. Phipps then hit the man in his chest, which caused the man to fall to the ground. While he was down, and fearing further attack, the man kicked Phipps twice, according to police. Phipps then took the snow blower and walked back to his car as the man headed inside his house to call police.
Both men hit during the incidents declined medical treatment.
