In a bombshell court appearance, the brother of one of Dennis Hastert's closest political proteges said publicly for the first time that he was sexually molested decades ago by Hastert.

Scott Cross, 53, previously told the Tribune that until recently he never spoke to anyone about what happened in Yorkville High School's locker room after wrestling practice one night when he stayed behind to try to drop some pounds before his next match.

But, after the former U.S. House speaker's indictment on hush money charges last year, the successful west suburban businessman said he could no longer bury the past.

He long ago confirmed to the Tribune that he was the man behind the government's Individual D moniker. He asked, though, that his identity not be revealed until he appeared publicly in court for Hastert's sentencing. On Wednesday, in front of a packed courtroom, he said his former coach molested him during a one-time incident when he was 17.

His older brother, Tom Cross, 57, of Oswego, is the former longtime Illinois House GOP leader. Tom Cross has credited Hastert with introducing him to political life and helping him ascend to public office.

Hastert asked the former legislator earlier this year if he would write a letter of support for his sentencing, but Tom Cross by then was aware of his brother's allegation and did not respond, according to sources.
