President Obama warns landlords: Criminals have right to rent from YOU!

The Obama administration sent out a stark warning to landlords around the nation via new guidance that says when it’s OK to refuse renting to those with criminal backgrounds, and when it’s not – when it moves into the camp of racial discrimination.

As the Daily Caller noted, the federal Fair Housing Act doesn’t mention criminals as a protected class. But the Department of Housing and Urban Development said in its newest guidance that citing the criminal record of a potential renter as cause to deny rent is oftentimes a form of racial discrimination.

Democratic Illinois Bill would bar colleges asking about criminal past before admission

SPRINGFIELD — Colleges in Illinois would not be allowed to ask prospective students about criminal convictions during the admissions process under a bill approved Tuesday by the House Higher Education Committee.

The legislation, HB 4446, is sponsored by Rep. Barbara Wheeler, R-Crystal Lake. It was approved on a 16-1 roll call.

"This bill is part of the overarching idea that education and meaningful employment helps reduce recidivism," Wheeler said. "This provides an opportunity for students — adult students, young students — who may have had a criminal record. It gives them an opportunity to apply for school without feeling any roadblocks or having any roadblocks."

She said the legislation permits a college or university to ask a student, once admitted, about his or her criminal record.

"The student will have to self-report, and then the college will be able to make accommodations for that student, whether it's to encourage him to go into programming, to encourage him to be part of a work-study program, also to limit activities as well as housing," Wheeler said.
