A 39-year-old man who was participating in a running race in Grant Park Thursday evening was pronounced dead after collapsing as the race had begun a short time earlier, according to officials.

The man was participating in the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge when he collapsed and emergency crews were called to Grant Park in 100 block of North Columbus Boulevard at 7:36 p.m., according to Chicago police.

The man was taken by a private ambulance service to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police and fire officials said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office was notified about the death but could not provide any details. An autopsy is expected on Friday.
