BREAKING NEWS: AUBURN, Massachusetts Police Officer Officer Ron Tarentino shot & killed in the line of duty - The shooter, Jorge Zambrano, 35, is on the loose


AUBURN, Mass. —An Auburn police officer who was shot and killed early Sunday morning has been identified.

Police are investigating the circumstances regarding the shooting on Rochdale Street. 
Police said the shooting took place during a traffic stop at 12:30 a.m.  Officer Ron Tarentino pulled over a vehicle and during the stop, Tarentino was shot multiple times in the chest. The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle, according to state police. 
A resident told Newscenter 5 he heard the shooting unfold. "I didn't see anything, but I heard rapid fire," the resident said. "Initially I thought it was fireworks." 
Tarentino was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced dead. He joined the Auburn police department in May of 2014 after  Tarentino was 42 years old and is survived by his wife and three children. 
"The Auburn police, the town of Auburn, and the law enforcement community have suffered a tragic loss this morning," said Auburn police chief Andrew Sluckis Jr.
