Driving While Black with Cognac Kills - Alicia Johnson, 22, charged in fatal hit-and-run admitted drinking cognac before crash: Prosecutors

A drunken female black wildebeest charged in the death of a man killed in a hit-and-run over the weekend in the Avalon Park neighborhood admitted she drank a glass of cognac before driving and was going as much as 50 mph when she hit the man, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Alicia Johnson, 22, was arrested at her home about 20 minutes after hitting the 51-year-old man around 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 7900 block of South Stony Island Avenue, according to police. Johnson was ordered held in lieu of $35,000 bail in a hearing Tuesday before Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas.

Johnson was driving a red Chevrolet Impala south on Stony Island when the car hit the man as he walked in the crosswalk, police said. She then fled the scene, according to a police news release. Two people in the car saw Johnson drive through a green light as the man crossed east at 79th Street, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Police officers who were waiting at the intersection to turn left saw the Impala hit the man and flee south on Stony Island, and their squad car video captured the incident, prosecutors said Tuesday.
