Memphis TN Police Officer Verdell Smith, 46, struck, killed by fleeing gunman's car after shooting rampage

A gunman ran down a longtime Memphis cop, killing the officer while fleeing a rolling shooting spree that wounded three men, authorities said.

Officer Verdell Smith, 46, died at a hospital after the suspect struck the 18-year veteran of the Tennessee force with a car at around 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

The deadly rampage critically wounded two men sitting outside an uptown Southern bar known as Westy’s before going two blocks west to Bass Pro Shops, where a male employee was shot while collecting shopping carts, according to the Commercial Appeal. His condition was not immediately known.

Officers heard gunshots ring out at around 10 p.m. in the downtown streets bustling with nightlife and found the shootings victim.
