PHILADELPHIA — Two Chicago women who lost their children prematurely, one to South Side gun violence and another in a Texas jail cell after a traffic arrest, joined a group of mothers Tuesday night in an emotional appeal for gun control and police reforms at the Democratic National Convention.

The Mothers of the Movement's 10-minute prime-time onstage appearance opened with a behind-the-scenes video showing Hillary Clinton meeting last November in Chicago to discuss gun violence with Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, Geneva Reed-Veal and several other mothers. The video showed one of the women asking Clinton what they can do to keep other mothers from experiencing what they have.

"Well, I think you can continue to speak out, but you will be more effective if you do somehow band together," Clinton responds. "So that it's a constant drumbeat, as to say, 'Look, we are citizens. We are mothers. We lost children. This is not only wrong, it is unacceptable and here are the things we can do to prevent it from ever happening again.'"

After the meeting, the mothers began traveling as a group, with some appearing at Clinton campaign events.
