At least 20 people across Chicago were shot over a 21-hour period from Friday morning to Saturday morning, including a 17-year-old boy shot dead in Chatham, a woman killed during a fight in Austin and a man wounded in a lakefront park on the North Side.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred when a fight broke out between several women in the South Austin neighborhood. They were in the first block of North Leclaire Avenue at 3:20 a.m. Saturday when the fight escalated into violence; a 27-year-old woman was shot in the head and pronounced dead. Another woman, 21, was shot in the ear.
In addition, two 28-year-old women were stabbed. One was stabbed in the left hand and got herself to West Suburban Medical Center. The other was stabbed in the left wrist and right arm; she got herself to Rush Oak Park Hospital.
Bystanders stood in groups at the crime scene tape; many stayed silent when police asked if they knew anything about the shooting. Officers with flashlights found a trail of blood down Leclaire that stretched for nearly a full city block.
