One of the last remaining Battle of Britain pilots who helped dig the tunnel out of the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp made famous in The Great Escape film has died aged 96.
Nigel Drever was one of the last remaining Spitfire pilots from World War II and ended up in the infamous camp near Sagan, Germany, after being show down.
Mr Drever, from Reading, Berkshire, got his RAF wings at the age of 19 on the day war broke out in 1939.
Flight Lieutenant Drever joined 98 Squadron and then 610 Squadron and flew several sorties until he was shot down by enemy fire in March, 1941.
He landed via parachute in France but was captured by the Germans and ended up in the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag Luft III in Sagan, now known as Zagan in Poland.
The camp was made famous by the film The Great Escape. Mr Drever was not one of the escapees, but did help to dig the tunnel.
