Elgin's Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd. plagued with purse thefts from vehicles
Numerous women visiting graves at Elgin's Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd., have reported purses stolen from their cars since May.
Employees at the city-owned cemetery have put up a sign at the office warning mourners of the problem, and are working with the public works department to erect signs around the cemetery, officials said.
"The sign here says 'Please, lock your doors, reports of purses stolen from cars,'" said Rick Ellis, public works supervisor for the cemetery. But only a small percentage of people visit the office, leading to the need for signs around the property.
Bluff City Cemetery covers 108 acres, and it is hard to patrol that with just one employee, Ellis said.
