DuJuyon M. Johnican, Jermaine E. Douglas and Comfort K. Robinson - 3 Feral Negroes charged in death of WHITE witness Michael Smith shot outside Brookfield Illinois home, police say
Three men have been charged in connection with the January murder of a 33-year-old Brookfield man who was supposed to testify in a criminal case against one of the men, Brookfield police said Monday.
Michael Smith was fatally shot in his car at about noon Jan. 27 in front of his home in the 3700 block of Forest Avenue after making a court appearance at the Leighton Criminal Court building in Chicago as a potential witness, police said.
His wife and 3-year-old son were inside the house waiting to have lunch with him. The victim's wife heard gunshots and ran outside to discover that her husband had been shot, police said.
Those charged in his murder are Comfort K. Robinson, 39, of Broadview; Jermaine Douglas, 25, of Chicago; and DeJuyon M. Johnican, 29, of Cicero. Douglas allegedly fired the shots that killed Smith, police said, and the other men conspired to kill him. All are being held at Cook County Jail. Douglas is being held without bail. Bail for Robinson and Johnican was set at $250,000 each.
Smith was to be a witness in a case against Robinson, police said.
In March 2015, Smith was working security at the now-closed Shrine nightclub, 2109 S. Wabash Ave. in Chicago. Robinson was involved in a disturbance at the club when security intervened.
Brookfield police Chief James Episcopo said that Robinson was in possession of a handgun at the time. Chicago police charged Robinson with several felonies after the disturbance, including the charges of armed habitual criminal and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
As Robinson's trial date approached, Smith was scheduled to testify as a witness and was in court Jan. 27. After a continuance was granted, Smith left the courthouse and was followed home.
Smith parked in front of his Brookfield home and before getting out of his car, Douglas pulled up, fired several gunshots at him at point-blank range and fled, police said.
Episcopo said Johnican and Robinson conspired with Douglas in planning the shooting and met at different locations before and after the shooting.
Chicago police arrested Douglas on Nov. 15 after a car chase that led to a crash at 87th Street and Ashland Avenue in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene.
Johnican was arrested without incident near his Cicero home the same day. Robinson had been in custody for several months on a separate felony charge. Authorities took him into custody immediately upon his release from the Danville Correctional Center on Friday.
"Michael Smith was a good man," Episcopo said in a statement. "(He was) a model citizen and hardworking family man who was killed in the prime of his life just for doing his job."
