Evergreen Park police are investigating an act of racially tinged vandalism that appeared on a village sign near the entrance of Yukich Field on Wednesday, the morning after Election Day last week, officials said.

Police Capt. Peter Donovan said a caller alerted the department at 6:14 a.m. that a brick welcome wall located on Kedzie Avenue between 87th and 88th streets had been defaced with white spray paint.

By 7 a.m., the village's Street Department was at work removing the graffiti, which listed a cuss word and "White People," Donovan said.

Evergreen Park mayor Jim Sexton called the vandalism a random act by "somebody disturbed with the whole American situation," but not something he considered a major problem.

Racial hostility in neighboring Mount Greenwood has bubbled up over the past two weeks following the fatal police shooting of a black man and the tense protests and counter protests that followed, but Sexton said things are "all calm" in Evergreen Park.

Outside of this isolated event, Evergreen Park police have not responded to any racially charged incidents or graffiti in recent weeks, Donovan said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the welcome sign vandalism, but police are pursuing the issue, he said.
