Standing in the sanctuary, wearing a magenta vestment, Cupich said keeping the city's neighborhoods safe is an issue "primary above others."
"Citizens and law enforcement people want to make sure to get up every day to have society protected," Cupich told about 1,200 parishioners at the home church of the Rev. Michael Pfleger. "And for some in society and some in law enforcement who go another direction, accountability has to be there.
"But that accountability is not to exclude, not to deny; it's an accountability that says, 'You're my brother. You're my sister. And I want to have joy of addressing these issues together.' That's hard."
Pfleger, known nationally for his efforts in fighting violence, introduced Cupich to the congregation and commended the archbishop for his compassion toward those who "society looks down on as throwaways."
"You challenge us to not only hear the gospel but to live the gospel every day, (and) to care about the poor and forgotten, those who suffer injustice, racism and prejudice," Pfleger said.
Cupich joked with the crowd that he would try to limit his unscripted sermon because he knew they were "used to short homilies" from Pfleger — a priest with a reputation for Sunday stemwinders.
