Bar Bouncer, Angel Ortiz, Jr., 51, shot & killed by stray bullet at Brudder's Bar & Grill 3600 N Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL - The bullet exploded his coconut like a water balloon
CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 51-year-old man shot at an Irving Park bar over the weekend, died of his injuries Monday morning.
Family identified the man as Angel Ortiz, Jr. He was working as a bouncer at Brudder's Bar when he was shot in the head on Saturday night.
He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died. No one is in custody.
Ortiz was inside the bar, located in the 3600-block of North Pulaski Road on the city's Northwest Side, when a shooter fired from outside the bar through the window.
A Thai restaurant nearby that has multiple surveillance cameras may have captured an image of the shooter.
Police would not say if the victim was the intended target or if the shooting stemmed from an altercation. The windows of a vehicle parked across from the bar were also shot out. Witnesses said that the shooting occurred shortly after the bouncer had broken up a fight outside and then returned inside the bar.
Family members remembered Ortiz as a caring person who loved the Chicago Bears, going to the games no matter how poorly they were doing.
An online fundraiser has been set up to help pay for the funeral costs for Ortiz, who is a grandfather. On the fundraising page, family called him an "amazing ball of energy."
A funeral is planned for Thursday.
