Tennis players looking to drop in and play a match won't have to pay to use the new courts at Maggie Daley Park under a pricing change made by the Chicago Park District.

The Park District planned to charge players an hourly rate to use the six tennis courts, which opened last week at the northeast corner of the park at Randolph Street and Lake Shore Drive. But the Park District decided it will only charge players to reserve the court. No fee will be charged for players who walk up to use the courts, said spokeswoman Jessica Maxey-Faulkner.

She said the free walk-up policy was made in response to community input. Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, said he negotiated the change after he got "significant negative feedback from residents" and asked Park District General Superintendent Michael Kelly to reconsider the hourly fees.

In his newsletter emailed to residents, the downtown alderman thanked Kelly for adjusting the policy and "making these tennis courts affordable and accessible for all Chicagoans."
