Rachel Smith holds fast to a letter Seth Goodwin wrote her after her father died.

"It was one of the most beautiful, kind and caring letters," Smith said Thursday.

Smith is now mourning the death of Goodwin, a 24-year-old Grayslake man who authorities said died in a March 28 motorcycle crash in Lake Villa Township. Smith's body and motorcycle weren't found until nearly a week later.

She said the letter showed a different side of Goodwin, who projected a tough-guy persona.
