ROBBERY SUSPECT SHOT BY CHICAGO POLICE IN ENGLEWOOD (First of two Chicago Police Shootings on Thursday)
A robbery suspect was shot by Chicago Police officers Thursday night in the Englewood neighborhood, in the first of two police-involved shootings within an hour of each other on the South Side.
About 6:50 p.m., officers were called to a robbery in the 6700 block of South May, according to a CPD statement and Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac.
A 24-year-old man pointed officers to a man he said had robbed him, police said. They chased the suspect down a gangway and saw a weapon in his hand, police said.
The officers told him to drop it and shot him twice in "the lower extremities" when he didn't, police said.
He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Investigators recovered a weapon at the scene, police said.
The officers involved the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, per CPD policy. IPRA is investigating the use of force.
CPD Deputy Supt. John Escalante said both body cameras and squad car cameras were on at the time of the shooting.
About 45 minutes later, a person was shot by police in South Shore.
