CHICAGO - Demonstrators plan peaceful protest in Mount Greenwood on Sunday

An ad hoc group of faith-based leaders and activists are planning to coalesce Sunday to bring attention to racial tensions over a police-involved shooting in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

The broad and diverse coalition is composed of multiple factions that hold various beliefs on how best to handle the problem that has bubbled up in the community since off-duty police officers fatally shot a black man there on Nov. 5, but all agree that something needs to be done.

Sunday's demonstration, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the intersection of 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue, will be the third held in Mount Greenwood since police shot 25-year-old Joshua Beal during an altercation in which officers say he brandished a gun.

Protests over police-involved shootings have become routine in Chicago since the city's release of the Laquan McDonald video last November, but while such demonstrations have been largely unopposed in other neighborhoods, some residents of Mount Greenwood, a predominantly white enclave that is home to many police and firefighters, have confronted black demonstrators with a level of contempt reminiscent of civil rights era clashes.

Jedidiah Brown, a community activist with a wide social media reach who claimed responsibility for calling the Nov. 8 protest, is cautiously optimistic that Sunday's event can bridge the divide between demonstrators and Mount Greenwood residents.

"My goal on Sunday is to make the peace and the love and the solution louder than the pain and the anger and the process that we're in," said Brown, who recently met twice with Mount Greenwood residents in the last week in an effort to initiate constructive dialogue about the shooting and subsequent protests, and to clear up any misconceptions about the demonstrator's' intentions.
